Tanzania's move to economic development has had the benefit of an increase in tourism to the country and with this increase comes the potential to develop new destinations. Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are names that epitomize African safaris and they sustained the country's tourism during the economic downturn of the 1970's and 1980's. Tanzania is a legendary safari destination due to the iconic areas of its northern safari circuit. Mozambique, Zambia and Uganda are some of the countries that are developing their tourism potential but it is in one of Africa's better-known safari countries where the most dramatic developments are happening. Areas that were once too remote to develop for tourism are now opening up all over the continent due to improved communication structures and infrastructure. The iconic names such as Serengeti, Masai Mara and Kruger are still sought after but there are a number of dramatic new areas for the safari connoisseurs to choose from.
